We are starting a new initiative in India for applied genomics and development of novel methods for diagnostic microbiology.  Preliminary results are excellent and cooperation from other labs is required for
further progress. The projects fall into two categories: Automatic Gene Mapping System and Automated Infection and Disease Diagnosis System.  Both projects deal with the current technical problems faced in sample
preparation, image analysis, data collection, and lack of automation.  The idea is to develop novel instrumentation with the relevant software combined with novel diagnostic kits and also to provide clinical services.
We also envision that we can contribute towards the pharmaceutical sciences in terms of generating data for drug manufacture (biopharmaceuticals). India is seen as a rising Biotechnology market and vast
opportunities exist for collaborations, commercialisation of technology, manufacturing etc.  The scale and scope of these projects is very large and therefore international collaborations are required in order to
