Meeting on Microbial Respiratory Chains
19 - 23 March 2006, Tomar, Portugal

The aim of this European Workshop, organised by the EFB Section on Microbial Physiology, was to help all laboratories interested in the physiology, biochemistry, and genetic regulation of bacterial electron transfer chains to exchange information and establish collaborations. It focused on bacterial electron transfer reactions, especially those that enable bacteria to adapt to oxygen starvation, reactive oxygen or reactive nitrogen species.

Bioprocess Engineering Course

This course was directed specifically at Ph.D. students and experienced biotechnologists from research institutes, universities and industry. It was organised under the auspices of The European Federation of Biotechnology by the Working Group on Bioreactor Performance, in collaboration with other Working Groups (Working Group on Modelling, Monitoring, Measurement & Control and Working Group on Downstream Processing and Recovery of Bioproducts) of the Section on Biochemical Engineering Science. The course covered the full spectrum of bioprocess engineering, starting from genetic concepts for micro-organisms used to produce pharmaceutical and other products via microbial physiology, bioreaction kinetics to bioreactor design.
