Workshop on “Opportunities for new functional food, healthcare and wellness products”

Context:

Some Latin American plants with health-related attributes have the potential to satisfy the growing international demand for foods, healthcare and wellness products with high nutritional and functional value, especially in Europe.  Thus it is important to promote the development of export markets for functional food products from Latin American agro-biodiverse crops.  This need is being addressed in the EC project EULAFF (European Action on Latin American Functional Foods; http://www.efb-central.org/eulaff/).

The commercial development of a functional food sector and its corresponding supply chain has the potential to significantly contribute to the economic development of Latin American countries, which , along with the development of a European functional foods sector, is the main purpose of EULAFF.

In addition, identification of the active ingredients in these foods, and characterisation of their therapeutic and pharmacological activities would provide new opportunities in the pharmaceutical, cosmetics and ingredients sectors.

Previous workshops held by EULAFF demonstrated a number of promising value chains that have been identified by Latin American research teams and that are of potential interest for European companies in the food, drinks and pharmaceutical sectors.

Objectives of the Workshop

  1. To present and discuss research findings that are of potential commercial interest
  2. Analyse the opportunities for commercialisation in Europe
  3. Analyse the possible limitations for reaching the European market (supply chains, institutions, policies)
  4. Develop an action agenda

Work Programme

Day 1 – Open forum – opportunities, obstacles and challenges – from farm to market

Day 2 – Basic principles and ideas for a Work agenda on the subject

The area of food science and technology has been a priority of research and UNAM has a special programme. The following units conduct quality research in food science and technology: Faculty of Chemistry’s Department of Foods; Faculty of Sciences; Biotechnology Institute; Biology Institute; Institute of Chemistry; Centre of Genomic Science; and Faculty of Medicine.  The area of functional foods has been considered a priority in Mexico as a result of the long tradition of using plants and other food stuffs as healing methods, and the emergence of biotechnology and recent applications in developing more nutritious crops has attracted Mexican researchers’ attention. In the case of UNAM, several researchers are now working in improving quality and availability of nutrients.  Moreover, UNAM has been the host of CamBioTec, an initiative to promote the transfer of agri-food biotechnologies in Latin America. CamBioTec’s ten-year experience in this matter would be an asset for the promotion of cooperation between Europe and Latin America. UNAM will be represented in EULAFF by Dr. José Luis Solleiro, Head of the Technology Transfer Office of the UNAM:  .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) www.unam.mx/

About EULAFF Project

EULAFF is a project supported by the European Commission Directorate-General for Research which focuses on supporting the functional food sectors in Europe and Latin America. It aims at creating an agri-food chain innovation system for identification and development of novel functional foods, in order to build a sustainable bi-regional functional food sector. The specific goals of the EULAFF project will contribute to:

For achieving these goals the project has planned a series of lectures, debates, roundtables and symposia with the participation of authoritative scientists, experts from the industry and several stakeholders from Europe and Latin America. The proposal also includes the development of a virtual community networking system and on-line information resources to support the collaborative effort and to stimulate the dissemination of information pertaining to the use of biological diversity of agricultural crops grown in Latin America with functional food potential.
