Dr. Adel El-Beltagy

Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), Director General, ICARDA

CGIAR was established in 1971 and is an informal association of fifty-eight public and private sector members that work to "promote sustainable agricultural development based on the environmentally sound management of natural resources". CGIAR are cosponsored by the World Bank, UNEP, FAO and the UNDP. Details about CGIAR, its history, members, aims and activities are available on this site. The Group is comprised of some 16 international research centres which carry out research on various aspects of agriculture. The International Centre for Agricultural Research in Dry Areas (ICARDA) was established in 1977 and is one of the 16 research centres which come under the auspices of CGIAR.
