EAGLES Health Lecturer Tour Grants

European Action on Global Life Sciences (EAGLES) Health Programme will award grants of up to 5.000€ to leading biomedical scientists and other health specialists, including commentators and journalists, from the developing countries (DEC) to undertake Lecture Tours around Europe. Such tours may involve scientists from both DEC and Europe.

The EAGLES Lecturers will be chosen for their experience and knowledge of the health challenges faced by the DEC and their ability to communicate the needs of the DEC to the European public and European institutions.  Their remit will be to communicate from their own personal experiences how European health research programmes and policies affect their own countries and regions.

Journalists workshop on Avian Flu

29 –31 January 2007
Kampala, Uganda

The workshop, supported by the EAGLES Health Project and the Commonwealth Media Developmennt Fund, aimed to sensitise the media to the threat of avian flu, and also to broaden understanding and access to useful information.

Prof David McConnell

Co-Vice Chairman EAGLES (Trinity College Dublin, Ireland)

David McConnell, a molecular geneticist, is Professor of Genetics at Trinity College Dublin. He is a member of the European Molecular Biology Organisation and the Royal Irish Academy. He received his PhD from the California Institute of Technology in 1971, and held an Eleanor Roosevelt Research Fellowship at Harvard University in 1976-77. He pioneered the development of molecular genetics and genetic engineering in Ireland, participating in several EC biotechnology programmes, and collaborating with ICI, Guinness, Schering Plough, Biocon, BP and NovoNordisk in various biotechnology projects. He planned and led the development of the Smurfit Institute of Genetics, a leading centre for research and teaching of genetics. He was a founding participant in the Yeast Genome Project. He advised UNIDO on many projects, and was Chairman of the Selected Committee which reported on the location of the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology. Formerly Vice Provost of Trinity College, he is currently a member of the Irish Council for Science Technology and Innovation and Chairman of The Irish Times Trust. He is a member of the Executive Board of The European Federation of Biotechnology.

Jens Degett

Jens Degett is the Executive Director of the European Action in Global Life Sciences (EAGLES) in Madrid, Spain. He was Head of the Communication and Information units at the European Science Foundation (ESF) Strasbourg (France) from 2000 - 2005. Producer and host of the most listened to weekly radio programme ”Studie 2000” in Denmark from 1994-2000, he has more than 400 hours/6 years of radio and television broadcast experience. Before his broadcast days, he was responsible for communication with stakeholders and media in the Danish biotech company Novo Nordisk. He has five years experience as board member of a Danish development NGO (IBIS) and he has been working as consultant for Danish communication projects in the developing world. He was also one of the founding members of World Federation of Science Journalists (WFSJ).
