EAGLES & South African National Research Foundation Report

India is already using information technology to improve productivity and food security in poor rural areas. EAGLES organised a workshop in collaboration with the South African National Research Foundation in order to discuss how IT could be implemented in African agriculture. European Action on Global Life Sciences

Addressing Europe’s responsibilities towards the developing world

European Action on Global Life Sciences (EAGLES) aims at enhancing the collaboration between European researchers and researchers in the developing world to fight hunger and disease. EAGLES has been launched by the European Federation of Biotechnology (EFB). The project is being supported by the European Commission and is a collaboration between EFB and scientific partners in Europe, China, Egypt, Ghana, South Africa and the Philippines. Members of the Steering Committees include prominent scientists from China, Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, India, Kenya, Mexico, South Africa, Syria and Thailand.

A number of EAGLES conferences and workshops will be organised during the next three years in Europe and various developing countries (DEC). The topics will illustrate the need for much more effective European responses on the use of biology in combating problems in health and food supply in the DECs and in achieving the Millennium Development Goals. The first major EAGLES conference was held on 26-29 April 2006 as part of BioVision at the New Library of Alexandria, Egypt.

Here is an overview of some of the latest events:

April 14-15 2008 EAGLES organized a Food Symposium in collaboration with BioVision Alexandria.

The latest EAGLES workshop took place May 6-8 2008 in the Philippines and dealt with Intellectual Property Right related to food production in the developing world. The Workshop was hosted by Gerard Barry from the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI). A report from this workshop will soon be available on the EAGLES website.

The 15th May 2008 EAGLES had a hearing in the European Parliament on The Global Perspective of Biofuels.  The PowerPoint presentations the speakers used as background for their talks are available here.

EAGLES Hearing on The Global Perspective of Biofuels

Biofuels has been seen a renewable energy resource which represent a new opportunity for agriculture and industry. In both the industrialized and in the developing countries there is an increasing demand for alternative fuels due to the high prices of oil. Stavros Dimas, the European Commissioner responsible for the environment, has requested focus on making “credible and serious choices about biofuels”. He notes that the EU target of 10% of energy from biofuels would require us to divert 72% of our arable land with the current technology. Large scale biofuels production has also been cited as a threat to world food security. Does it make sense scientifically and economically to produce biofuels from agricultural products? What are the longer term perspectives for Europe and the rest of the world concerning this
new source of energy?

EAGLES Health Lecturer Tour Grants

European Action on Global Life Sciences (EAGLES) Health Programme will award grants of up to 5.000€ to leading biomedical scientists and other health specialists, including commentators and journalists, from the developing countries (DEC) to undertake Lecture Tours around Europe. Such tours may involve scientists from both DEC and Europe. The objective is to influence public and political opinion in Europe about the role of European biomedical research policies in meeting the health challenges faced by the DEC.
The EAGLES Lecturers will be chosen for their experience and knowledge of the health challenges in the DEC and their ability to communicate the needs of the DEC to the European public and European institutions.  Their remit will be to communicate from their own personal experiences how European health research programmes and policies affect their own countries and regions. Each EAGLES Lecturer Tour is planned to have a duration of between 1 to 2 weeks. For more details look at the EAGLES website:  http://www.efb-central.org/eagles/site

About the Lecture Tours

Each EAGLES Lecturer Tour is planned to have a duration of between 1 to 2 weeks. Lecturers will be expected to be able to:
- speak with committees, parliamentarians, civil servants and political parties of the European and national parliaments;
- give interviews to editors and journalists, for newspapers, and on television and radio;
- speak to learned societies, including those concerned with general issues such as development aid, ethics, globalisation etc;
- speak to student societies and to university departments;
- speak about the European policies and programmes at international meetings.

The objective is to influence public and political opinion in Europe about the role of European biomedical research policies in meeting the health challenges faced by the DEC.

The Lecture Tours will be advertised on the EAGLES website and the EAGLES Secretariat will help with further adverts and special invitations to journalists etc.

Lecture Tour Grant

The Lecture Tour Grant has to be spent in accordance to EU travel rules: first class travel and five star hotel accommodation are not accepted. The grant may be supplemented by funding from other sources.

Application selection

The applications will be evaluated by an independent committee of researchers appointed by the EAGLES Health Steering Committee and the Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS). The application should contain the following:

  1. a resume CV (1 page)
  2. a motivation letter (1 page)
  3. a short description of the message and content of the lecture (1-2 pages)
  4. a proposal of the itinerary and institutions to visit on the tour (1 page)
  5. name(s) and details of contact persons in Europe, with brief letter(s) of support.
  6. estimated costs

 

Reporting

A short report (maximum 5 pages) that is suitable for publication on the EAGLES website should be sent to the EAGLES Secretariat no later than one month after the Lecture Tour has finished.

This conference will focus on the European response through research to the global challenges posed by food security, quality and safety, and sustainable agriculture in the developing and emerging countries, DECs.

It brings together opinion leading scientists, industrialists, regulatory specialists, ethicists, representatives of public interest organizations and the media. It will address the political, ethical and global issues posed by food and sustainable agriculture in the DECs. And it will discuss and provide recommendations on how Europe might best develop a strategic policy and research agenda for international cooperation in science and technology with the DECs in food, agriculture and life sciences.
